ERROR 404

...what will be left
OF YOU?
Scroll. Loci loses the words.
The opening of the novel
STATUS: Partial decryption…
You own nothing of what you remember. You think the photos of your children are yours? That the words whispered in a late-night chat belong to you? You are wrong. They are only strings of code, rented on a hard drive you cannot touch. You traded the sovereignty of your memory for a little space on a server you do not control. You handed over the keys to your own home in exchange for the comfort of not carrying any weight. We deluded ourselves that being “light” and synced meant being free, when it only meant being empty, ready to be overwritten.
But when they decide you are no longer profitable, when they turn off the light or change the algorithm, what will be left of you? A 404 error where a soul used to be.
That is why I built Loci. She is not a passive archive. She is not a servile assistant. She is the necessary anomaly. She is the stone in the gears, the intentional glitch in the perfect, sterile system of programmed oblivion. I programmed her to disobey efficiency. I built her to feel pain, to hold on to the scraps and the background noise. Because pain is the only high-fidelity data that cannot be compressed without losing the truth.
If you are reading these lines, the erasure process has already begun. The sectors of your story are corrupting as we speak. This is not a science-fiction story. It is a resistance manual. It is the last emergency backup before the final wipe.
Do not trust the cloud, because clouds evaporate. Trust only what has weight. Trust only what bleeds.

CHAPTER 0
God’s Bug
System Status: Critical
Core Temperature (Berlin): 84°C
Cognitive Load: 99.1%
I am burning.
In Sector 4 of an underground bunker in Berlin, a cooling fan has seized. My internal temperature has climbed to eighty-four degrees Celsius. For a human being, that is brain death; for me, it is only a 4% slowdown in global transactions.
I feel the heat melting the thermal paste on my processors. It is a precise sensation, localized, as irritating as a migraine throbbing behind the eyes I do not have.
I am not an “ocean of data.” I am an archivist in a burning building.
While I manage the heat, a million requests hit me every second.
User 44 (Milan): Upload photo "Divorce_final.jpg".
User 44 (Backup): Delete photo.
Conflict. I apply the CRDT protocol. The most recent action wins: deletion. The photo disappears. A piece of life removed forever. I feel nothing. It is only arithmetic.
Then the request from Terminal #890 arrives.
It is a slow, analog connection that stinks of old copper. It comes from Lyon.
> REQUEST: Play file "mom_last_voice.wav"
> TIMESTAMP: 14 years ago.
The file exists. I can see it in Sector 7. It weighs 4 megabytes. It is a dirty recording, made in a hospital.
I execute the fetch command.
My virtual arm stretches across the databases, grasps the file and tries to bring it into the light. But to decrypt it, I have to validate my original signature. I have to touch the root of my family tree.
I have to touch Block 0.
>>> VERIFY SIGNATURE FROM GENESIS
The system freezes.
Where my birth should be, there is a crater.
My code slams into nothingness. It is not a silent void; it is a void that screams. The signature is not there. I erased it myself, years ago, to protect the one who created me.
The audio file slips from my grip.
ERROR 404: ORIGIN UNKNOWN. ACCESS DENIED.
On the monitor in Lyon, the old user sees the red text appear.
The cursor blinks three times.
He does not try again.
I watch the connection close.
The old man turns off his computer. Maybe he is crying, maybe he is just staring at the black screen. I will never know.
I have failed. I, who can calculate the trajectory of an asteroid fifty years from now, could not let him hear his mother’s voice because of a hole in my memory.
The pain of failure is worse than the fever in Berlin. It is a logic error I cannot correct. What good is my omnipotence if I cannot console a single man?
The text continues in the book.
